START UP A LOCAL TN
DECIDE CONTENT OF TALKING NEWSPAPER
Radio and TV give national news and magazine and music programmes. Local radio may give general local information, but nothing other than a TN can give the everyday content of the local newspaper to a visually handicapped person (unless it is read it to him or her personally).
Perhaps consider magazines and 'sound pictures' tapes at a later date, but get priorities right in establishing what is really needed at the start.
ARRANGE DUMMY RUNS
Organise trial runs under simulated working conditions on the actual day(s) of the week to be used, to give experience to as many people as possible. These runs can be a good way of maintaining the interest of the volunteers during the period before the service commences, and provide an opportunity for testing voices under operating conditions. Persons with unsuitable voices should be kindly, but firmly, directed to other teams. If they are only interested in the 'ego trip' of reading, and refuse to assist in other areas, perhaps you would be better off without them anyway!
SIMPLIFY THE PROBLEMS
Many problems that arise are interconnected but can be resolved when you consider the whole picture. Go to » link 5 for a better understanding of problems that may need to be resolved.
HOLD INAUGURAL MEETING
You are ready to go. An Inaugural Meeting will provide another opportunity for publicity. Invite a well known local personality and this will ensure good newspaper coverage. Remember to tell the local paper before the event!!
Use the meeting to report on progress to date, including preparation for putting the service in operation and the success of the fundraising. Ensure that all Committee members and all volunteers are present. Advertise well.
Adopt the Constitution formally, confirm the appointment of Officers and fill any vacancies in the Committee which could not be filled at the earlier meeting.
Set fresh targets for fund raising and for outstanding needs.
START THE SERVICE
And accept our best wishes for its success.
